Subject: Re: [Harp-L] Subject: Facebook vs privacy issues

Me too (re being stalked), so I get the need for privacy online. My initial
foray into facebook was purely to connect with harmonica friends who'd
already joined. I DEFINITELY see how great an idea it can be for professional
musicians who want to get their music and schedules out to their fans as
well as to post snippets about their lives (fans love that kind of stuff).
But it's a double-edged sword. For private citizens, I doubt most are truly
aware just how much info is being put out there which immediately becomes
'public domain', even photos of your own children which can show up
anywhere.

I reached the point I didn't mind all that much since I've been slowly
coming out of my shell as I grow older and I don't have anything to hide. I'm
no longer afraid. However the idea that a news source can draw up new rules
to 'attach everything one's ever written online to one's facebook id'
smacks far too much of Big Brother for my taste..and if one didn't know about
it going in, all the worse. That's my personal line drawn in the sand.

I like the musical connections, I personally enjoy interacting with people
who play harmonica from all over...and even catching up with some old
friends, but there's a point where one makes a choice how to handle FB based on
your personal code.

PS: I DO still post there occasionally--might as well make the most of the
connections available to express my personal pov and to continue musical
contacts, but I will never again write on any site which has signed a
contract to be connected there without my permission.

Interesting. Having been stalked twice, I don't put anything online with my
real name attached.

One of the big draws, from what friends try to explain to me when they try
to convince me to sign up, is that it's really easy to find people on
Facebook. Somewhere there's a mental disconnect between what they know
about my experiences and their wanting me to make myself easy to find.

Anyway, if someone wants to make their information available to
individuals, commercial interests and even data mining companies who then
correlate that info and resell it to others, that's a completely valid
choice for them.
