Re: [Harp-L] The Diatonic Chord Harmonica

Dana Kelle and his Pulmonica use a spiral-tuned harmonica (circular is a less accurate term). His is tuned in Low D.

Both the Pulmonica ad the HarmonicaMD harmonica are made by Seydel. Both companies have websites where they go into detail about the reasons for their designs. (And both companies are SPAH Silver Sponsors, I might add.)

To use the chords in a harmonica play a chord progression you need to know what chords are found where, and which ones are important to connect.

While Dr. Keller's spiral tuned instrument gives you more chords to play with, you also need more understanding to put them to use in any given song.

Dr. Schaman's tuning gives you a smaller set of chords, but makes those chord much easier to find and deploy.

Also: Would the circular-tuned harmonica be somewhat superior for medical use as compared to the model recommended by Dr Schaman because the entire 2 plus 1/2 octaves of the circular-tuned harmonica is correctly formed chords; on the circular-tuned harmonica then entire melodies can be accurately performed in chords. If the concept would be to improve lung function via chords then the circular-tuned harmonica would be the correct harmonica.

Perhaps Dr Schaman had been unaware of the circular-tuning concept at the time he designed his chord harmonica.
