He plays a tremolo on some things. Like "City of New Orleans". For years he's used an SM-57 shure mic through the board. Although, I have seen him run through an amp. The last 3 or 4 times I've seen him his playing seems complacent, boring. Solid yes but no energy or feeling. When he first started with Willie he did that smoking hot solo on "If You've Got the Money" on a High G harp. I couldn't wait to find a high G harp and learn it! I've NEVER heard him play it like that live. I think Mickey is a great player and I learned a lot listening to him with BW Stevens and then Willie. Maybe he's bored!

Johnny and the Nightcrawlers, Tyler TX

Speaking of Mickey Raphael, I saw Willie Nelson's show last night in
Riverside.

Mickey was great, as usual (so was Willie, of course). But from where we
were up in the balcony, I couldn't get any sort of look at his case or
equipment. Does anyone know whether he's using an effect or playing a
tremolo harp or something else to get that accordion sound on certain
songs? (I was going to ask him on facebook, but wouldn't you know he's
not on facebook anymore, apparently.)

I just play the harmonica & that is all I can play. Mickey Rapheal of
Willie Nelson's band just plays the harmonica.
I am just a guy learning the craft, but hope this will help.
