[Harp-L] Reed gapping questions

I should know the answers to these questions, but don't. Creeping senility or maybe exposure to Agent Orange while in Viet-Nam is the culprit, I guess. Anyway, the rule of thumb when gapping is that the gap should be as wide as the reed end is thick. OK, so what does either increasing the gap or decreasing that gap do to the sound produced and/or the playing characteristics of that reed?

Thanks,
Paul N.

PS: While I'm kidding about Agent Orange causing me to forget, that stuff really did cause a lot of not very nice problems - Parkinson's disease, a lot of cancers, etc. I got off easy with just diabetes.
