I don't know so much about the new Old Standby's with the plastic combs (they seem similar to the Pocket Pal and other harps in that price range), but I really like the "Old" Old Standbys with the traditional pear wood comb and unique cover plates.  I have picked up some really nice NOS Hicksville era versions of these as well as some vintage, lightly played, Pre Wars.  My understanding is that they shared the same plate stock as all the Marine Band Harps of that vintage.

They sound even better with some custom work, sealing the comb, etc.  The size makes for a really nice fit in your hands and the cover plate design imparts a unique tone.  I believe Charlie McCoy played and recorded quite a bit with these.  I recall this thread coming up a ways back in this forum too, so you may want to check out the archives.

What does anyone think of Hohner old standby? A few good things said about them
