[Harp-L] re: Single mic vocal + harp setup

Richard,

Yes, I believe that you're over thinking it. As you're singing only
backup the gig will be best served if you eq a single SM58 to get the best sound
from your harmonica. A single mic will let you focus on your performance
rather than your gear. Two mics can be a distraction, and a real bummer
if you accidentally start playing or singing into the wrong one! Work with
physical spacing and with your playing/singing dynamics to get the volume
levels you desire. The 58 is a cardioid (directional) mic and will tolerate
that just fine. Keep in mind that there is a proximity effect, as you
move very close on to the SM58 the bass response will become exaggerated, so
your distance from that mic affects tone as well as volume. Once you back
away from being directly on the ball of the mic the bass becomes 'normal',
and doesn't continue to roll off much as you move further away than a
couple inches.
