Re: [Harp-L] Circle of Fifths (Circle of Fourths) and Positions

Music "works" through a sense of gravity, or tension and release.

The "Mutha" of all progressions is the V (tension) resolving to the I (release).

Expanded upon, you may start to examine the "V" of the "V" resolving to the V and then to the I. (This is frequently shown as ii - V - I).

If you know Circle of Fifths, it is easy to see that the "V" of the "V" is the ii (in one form of another). Through the Circle of Fifths, if you know the "key", you may easily extrapolate the name of the chords used.

So, the Circle of Fifths is a good starting point to have in understanding the tension/release within the movement of chords as well as the exact chords used in many musical situations.

If you understand music theory from the jazz perspective, the Circle of Fifths is in there somewhere already.

Hi Ice

I think I understand music theory, at least from the perspective of jazz
improvisation, rather well yet I have never found a use for the circle of
fifths. I would really like to know how others are actually using it.

If one is reading notation then I could seen possible reasons to memorize
the circle but in the context of improvisation or even composition how does
it help?
