[Harp-L] Re: XB-40 reeds indestructable? Harp-L Digest, Vol 109, Issue 45

Interesting speculations on this topic, but do we have a big enough sample of XB-40s to know? I think probably not. Reed failure is essentially due to metal fatigue, which is caused by random imperfections in the metal. All modern harps other than the real cheapos are probably less prone to metal fatigue then the ones in the 1970s, but there are probably thousands of times more SP-20s etc in use than XB-40s; so more cases of failure. But whether this makes the rarer harps indestructable is unclear. Same goes for stainless steel reeds in Seydels. Without knowing the sample size no way of knowing the failure rate. Richard
