[Harp-L] RE: Taylor Hicks at GOP convention

Hicks cracked off a few licks during an interview with CNN as well. He was being pressed repeatedly by the interviewer implying that his appearence meant he supported Romney. Hicks sidestepped the questions time and again. Basically saying, "Hey, I'm a professional entertainer and this is a pretty big gig to be offered. Endo of story." As a professional he wasn't going to say one way or the other. When the interviewer refused to relent he didn't even bother to answer just whipped out the old gob iron and blew some tasty stuff. I thought that was brilliant. He's a pretty good player as well.

I was goofing around with the main riff as I listened to this. Richard plays an A harmonica in 2nd position. You can't quit play the riff in 2nd. I tried 3rd position which was better but it ends on a 3 draw double bent (B natural). Not easy on a D harp. To my surprise if fits beautifully on a C harmonica with no bends, 5th position.

Subject: [Harp-L] 7 Nation army on hunterharp.com

hi all,

I've posted a live audio recording of my trio with Brian Maw and Eli Preston to my site at hunterharp.com. It's the final song of our second set at a private party in Tetonia, Idaho, recorded August 10, 2012, and the piece in question is Jack White's "7 Nation Army," which he originally recorded with the White Stripes.

the harp on this piece is played through an Audix Fireball into the Digitech RP355, which goes straight to the PA. The sound setup is a basic amped blues patch with slapback delay, and it sounds good (meaning big and loud) on this piece. I didn't do a lot of shredding on the solo--I was in John Fogerty mode for that--but the rhythm work on the harp pushes the piece hard, and the trio interaction on the piece is very cool.

Enjoy.

I'm going to be in Denver from Oct 3-7 and in Miami from Oct 22-26. I'm
looking for some good places to play, preferably jazz, but blues or
something else would be cool too. Any help appreciated.

Yes, I substitute one note of the riff (the flat 6th degree of the scale, which Ryan correctly notes can't be played in 2nd position, at least not without an overblow on blow 1, which is a pretty tough overblow). Seemed to work okay. it's not unusual to have to make substitutions for notes on a diatonic harp.

You can play the F major scale with only two breath changes and no hole jumps:

2* 3 -3 -3* -4* -5 6 -6

As Slim says, using the slide is often faster and smoother than changing breath direction. That said, some combined actions, such as slide/hole change or slide/breath change (or slide/hole/breath change) can be more awkward and difficult to coordinate than simpler actions.

Thanks for the replys!

I found this:
http://12holechrom.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/chromatic-harmonica-ex-1-major-scales-14.png
I've studied the scales, and the fingerings seem to comply with your rule.

I am a bit skeptical of the F scale though.
-2 3 -3 -3* 5 -5 6 -6

Not only is hole no. 4 completely skipped, he also introduces a breath
change. Maybe the idea is to have some balance in the number of blow vs.
draw?

How would you play this scale?

B-Rads were tuned on the "corduroy" side, with a draw scraper, not the back side.

Hello Lasse

Many would disagree that the "groundwork" is in the practicing of scales. There are many other starting points. Here some examples that many would consider as important or far more important in the initial development of harmonica musicianship and musicianship in general:

(1) Practicing arpeggios.

(2) Developing your ear and your mind's-ear-to-harp connection.

(3) Playing melodies that truly interest you.

(1) Is anybody else having trouble posting to Harp-L? Sometimes my posts do
not show up on the list until hours after the email was sent. I am using

(2) Hohner's German website seems to be remodeled. Have you seen it yet?

I heard some harp in the background during the PBS coverage of the GOP convention (last night?) and when the camera pulled back to show the stage, it was Taylor Hicks a contestant from American Idol.

Congratulations on figuring out what you like. Thanks for the rock and blues. I'll take it.

Noise is music too. I've heard plenty of people playing washboards with Cajun bands. Washboards don't sing in any sense of the word. They make noise when you tap or scrape them. We could say the same about a drumkit--it's just a bunch of pieces of wood, metal, and skin that you bang on to make noises that might or might not sound like music. What makes it sound like music (or not) is the player. The same goes for pianos, guitars, harps, and overly amplified noise.

Ok Thanks!

Learn it from a pro it will pay off down the road.
I strongly believe in this also. Having learned several instruments on my
own I wish I would have gotten some better material or maybe taken just a
few lessons to get a good foundation. This time I think I have the time and
patience to learn it properly right from the start.
