Tonal music is music that has an associated key. (Chances are that you will
be playing 95% tonal music no matter who you are.) The key is the relative
chord of rest. The chord progression of a tonal piece will pull or
gravitate to that chord of relative rest. So listen to the tune and
identify the chord of rest. That's the key! Usually musicians only identify
the triad associated with the chord of rest when naming a key (eg. A minor
or G major rather than perhaps A minor 7 or G major 7).
