These tunes are all in minor keys and the first chord is the I chord, not the VI chord (standard practice is to use Roman numerlak when describing chords, Arabic when descriving individual notes).
 
Therefore this is a I - bVII - bVI, not a VI - V -IV .
 
In a natural minor scale the VII and VI chords are automatically built on the flat (or more correctly, minor) seventh and sixth desgrees of the scale, but that's not true in harmonic or melodic minor, so it's best to be explicit.
 
 
 
Very often the next chord in the sequence is the V chord, as in A minor, G, F, E. This sequence probably pre-dates recent pop music.

I call it a vi-V-IV, pronounced six five four--the vi is the relative minor of the tonic, so Do Ya by ELO also fits.
