Personally I think it's rude and a total lack of respect. Almost went toe to toe with a guy at a Muddy Waters show in the late 70's, It was ruining our evening, which turned out to be the last time I saw Muddy.

I've often played along to bar bands in nightclubs while sitting at the bar. That's usually OK, but I have gotten chewed out for it once or twice. I saw a guy playing along in a major concert venue once, but he was a bona fide nut case who landed in the psyche ward shortly thereafter.

I'd never play at national show like that, that's for sure. You have to use your judgement with local bars. Mostly I would play along at Grateful Dead cover band shows where the people visibly enjoyed it.
