Check to see if the mouthpiece is on backwards. There should be a slit in the end of the mouthpiece that allows clearance for the spring to travel at those precise points you mentioned. That slit should be on the end of the button. 

If not, see how much spring pokes up above the slide assembly. You may need to trim it. But if so, trim it when the slide is pushed in. That's when the spring is farthest down. If you trim it with the slide out, you could push the button in and run out of spring.

Hi David

The harp in question is a new custom harp which had a bad spring in it
(spring broke after a few hours of use). The slider felt rough with the old
spring and it still feels rough after I installed a new spring. The
roughness is felt at the beginning of the push and at the end of the
release.
