Re: [Harp-L] alnico or ceramic?

In general --and this is VERY general-- ceramic speakers are more
efficient and therefore louder with a given amount of power. They are
known for their "thump" on the low end.

Alnico speakers are generally not as loud, but they often have a
lovely compression at higher volumes.

Here is an important difference: ceramic speakers are often heavier.
If you mount four ceramics in your Bassman you will surely notice the
difference the next time you pick it up.

New alnico speakers are more expensive then new ceramics (again,
speaking in generalities). Of the choices you have in new speakers,
more alnicos are available from Jensen and Weber, and more ceramics
are available from Eminence.

My personal preference for alnico speakers is the Weber 10A125-0, and
for ceramic it is the Eminence Cannabis Rex. There are lots of good
choices. I know it is hard to directly compare speakers, but listen a
lot, talk to players with different amps, go to lots of jams and play,
and trust your ears.
