[Harp-L] Re: Spiral compare

Robert,

That is a nice, easy introduction to Spiral (Circular) Tuning and some of the capabilities
available using that note layout. Nice playing, too, in the demo!

My personal "likes" for Spiral Tuning are:
(1) No "missing" notes in the underlying diatonic scale.
(2) All harmonized chords (triads at a minimum) based on the underlying diatonic
scale available on every scale degree.
(3) All 7 modes and major and minor pentatonic scales available without bending.
(4) Bends available for "blue" 3rds, 5ths and 7ths.

Availability: Seydel is the only manufacturer (at present) that supplies Spiral tuning
as a standard tuning. It is referred to on the Seydel Harp Configurator as "Circular (2RW)"
in the drop-down selection for tuning. It is important to note that you have to base the
key selection on hole 1 blow. This corresponds to the 5th scale degree of the underlying
major scale. For example, if you want a harp that uses the "C" major scale as the underlying
major scale, you select "G" as the key in the Configurator. If you want a "G" scale harp,
select "D" as the key. A short way to remember this is to use a Circle of Fifths. Determine
the underlying major scale desired, and then enter the key of the next higher key (go
clockwise 1 key) from the Circle of Fifths.

Seydel is also the only manufacturer providing harps with stainless steel reeds. The Spiral
("Circular (2RW)") tuning is available on all models of the harps with stainless steel reeds.
My personal favorite is the Seydel Session Steel.

Bertram Becher (Seydel Europe) and Rupert Oysler (Seydel USA) are two of the most
knowledgeable and user-friendly people working in the harp business. I've been assisted
by both of these gentlemen, and have always gotten outstanding service from them.

Standard disclaimer: I have no financial interest, ties, etc. blah-blah-blah to Seydel. I just
like their harps and I like their business philosophy: provide an excellent product that the
CUSTOMER wants, in any CUSTOMER-specified configuration of tuning!

Well done!
Crazy Bob
