Yeah. While I'm a fan of Sam's (from the Garden State Festival last  
November where I videotaped him quite a bit), Smokey's Summertime is, as Jason  
Ricci called it 'mesmerizing' and THE version, and in fact retired his own  
(which was just beautiful). Smokey plays it on a chromatic while Jason of 
course  used a diatonic, but both still kept that delicious melody which is the 
heart  and core of Summertime.
 
 
I understand experimenting with more avant-garde jazz, but somehow - to me, 
 anyway - Summertime is one of those songs which just doesn't quite work as 
 well with dissonance. I'm personally too hooked on melody, I guess. But 
that's  me. Perhaps a flaw for someone who likes jazz. Our tastes are all 
different.  Still think the vocalist is terrific, though and Sammy's a great play
er.
