Tony-
Great to hear someone wantin' to harp up some alt-country. Too often folks
get stuck in Blues and spending so much time on the "you must sound like
(walter, butterfield, sonny boy, etc.) or die trying".
I currently play in an alt-country group here in Central PA. Some good
folks to listen to would be:
Mickey Raphael, he is Willie Nelsons harp player, and has done many side
projects in the genre as well.
Jeff Tweedy, formerly of Uncle Tupelo and currently fronts Wilco. He did
some harp on Uncle Tupelo (most underrated alt-country group ever) and does
occasional harp on Wilco stuff.
Pig Pen, played harp for Grateful Dead, had some pretty good licks on their
bluesy/country stuff, particularly Operator(Bb) from the American Beauty
album.
Finding riffs that work is the fun part. Just create your own. The
alt-country sound is so open for expression, you can do whatever you want
with it.
Keep us posted on your progress, and findings. This list gets so bogged
down in Blues, it seems folks forget how much other harpin' can be done out
there.

I am interested in alt-country music. Any good advice on where to find
riffs that will work with this type of music?
