Uhh,,but I would imagine that 'someone' was paying him. Maybe the community's arts/music fund?

I can recall a free concert in Charleston So. Carolina back in the 70s during 'Piccolo Spoletta' music fest. when Jr. Wells did (basically) the same thing. As time went on, he played less and less. But, in fairness, I think it may have been because of the heat/humidity?
