This is funny as I was thinking the same thing..but then, no it isn't just European. I have been doing it for almost ever. Generally I play chromatics and diatonics on the same tune.
But jazz on diatonic seems to be really popular in the northern tier countries. (Ger. Fr. Neth. Rus. Pol.). Wave is easy in D on a C chromatic, and therefore I was quite impressed with this rendition, as 'It twarn't easy". I was especially enamored with his choice of improv note sets. Sweet choices. Tasty. Maybe even scrumptious. It does my heart good to be lucky enough to witness this. I hope he keeps posting these gems.
