Re: [Harp-L] Are there pro harp players who do not know theory?

Mike,
I am not sure we have to "box in" everybody into becoming a blues or
jazz harmonica player by teaching them so much theory. Jazz harmonica
as I understand is an individual interpretation/ expression of music.
Because we cannot see what we play, no matter how much you learn cuts
into your intuitive ability to express. I am sure the likes of this
sentiment have been echoed before but I do agree with you on knowing
just enough theory and basics to be able to interact with other
musicians on stage. Otherwise we are being disingenuous in some ways
how old timers do/ did it.

I have to say we are fortunate to have people like yourself and many
others guide us to be better players. Ear training is more if not
equally important and in the end it is all about improvs and
arrangements. I have heard people say- Oh you sound like Kim Wilson,
John Popper or Little Walter but no one ever says you sound like
Cotton, Charlie, Gussow, Ricci, Carlos del Junco or the late Buddha.
These are folks who have reached the heights.

The only benefits as I see from learning it properly- you'll be
technically good and you can teach the instrument.
