[Harp-L] question about mic connection?

In order to use a lo z mic like an SM58 with an amp you will need an impedance matching transformer which will have an XLR connector on one end to plug into the mic cord and a 1/4" plug on the other to plug into the amp. A "rat tail" design (with a short length of cable between the plugs) is nice because it relieves stress on the amp jack. The mic is low impedance. The amp is high impedance. So you need a transformer to match impedance between the mic an the amp-- it's not just a matter of using adaptor plugs.

But if you are going for an "acoustic" sound, you can just plug the mic into the PA and not worry about an amp.

I like the Peavey IMT. Available here: http:// www.greenflymusicsupply.com/store/Peavey-6-inch-Low-to-High-Z-line- Transformer-Fem-XLR-p263.html

But there are others that work just as well.
