Music is a language and learning a supply of licks is similar to  
learning a foreign language from a phrase book  -  it's a stage in  
the learning process. If you stick with it, you'll eventually reach  
the point where you can speak the language. Then you don't  
concentrate so much on phrases as on what it is you want to say.
