Re: [Harp-L] Chris Michalek... harmonica genius

Right on! and nicely stated Tom.

Statements like this are absurd, come on Iceman you are a Tuning expert, you should know better!!,-) ALL Musicians MUST play in tune...unfortunately the idiom was created by blues guitar guys who didn't have tuners....but to say all players of this GENRE should NOT be very concerned about pitch is just ridiculous!

Those that are only interested in blues do not have to be very concerned
about pitch, as the out of tune is a part of the idiom

The below statement and those who think that as blues players they don't
need to be "very concerned about pitch" are part of the reason that much of
what is put out there as blues sounds like crap. When notes are slurred out
of pitch intentionally the effect can be (but isn't always) right for the
genre. When it's done out of lack of concern for pitch it's just bad
musicianship, period. This one reason why the instrument has not gotten the
respect it deserves. I don't care if it's blues or not, if you're serious
about advancing the harmonica it should be played like an instrument.
I.E. not casually, not sloppily.
