Re: [Harp-L] What other instruments do you play?

Playing diatonic with no holder and a keyboard... or with a holder and fretted instrument poses no particular mechanical problems. The diatonic is small, easily held, and doesn't have a button. Think Bob Dylan.

Larry Adler played a chromatic grasped in his right hand with his thumb on the button, leaving his left hand free for the piano. Ron Kalina plays jazz holding a chromatic the same way. It is difficult to hold the 16-hole harp level so he tilts his head to accommodate its droop.

I posit that use of a Hands-Free-Chromatic on a rack should be the choice of chromatic harmonica players who wish to play keyboard or fretted instrument. Enrico Granafei is a very accomplished dual instrumentalist on chromatic and classical guitar.

When you say doubles on something I think about actual "double" like John Mayall does with the one hand on the keys and one holding the harmonica.
He plays note for note with the keyboard....sans harprack.
I'm sure Howard levy could do this too.
I've tried playing the foot pedals to my old Hammond (bass) while playing harp.

Is there anyone who has this true "doubling" mastered?
I Mean without just playing straight harp (no bends)

Someone could do this with the accordion...
I've tried and it works...but I'm just not good enough on the accordion.

John Hammond has a good time with some good harp bends while on guitar...
who else can do this?

My cousin Ryan is proficient at Harp while playing keys ....no rack.
I think this is a real rare talent...

Howard Levy and Charlie McCoy are known for doubling on other instruments (piano and everything, respectively). Tom Ball is a fine guitar player, others on the list double on sax. There are many fine singers amongst us as well.

I've got an unusual one - I double on baroque recorder. For those interested, one of my recent concerts is at

Anyone else double on unusual instruments?
