[Harp-L] Newbie asking about tuning

I read at lot on this site about each person doing their own tuning, tweaking, customizing.
This is all great and good advice. but how does one learn to :
Tune
Tweak
Customize
what equipment dose one need to even get started with all this.

  I'd guess lucky coincidence.

For example, touring the Hohner factory, it is pretty obvious that not a lot
of time is allowed for set up and reed offset - not very time/cost effective
  for a company.

It was amazing how fast the employees worked - checking tuning and making
  sure all reeds played.

The fact that more are satisfied w/out of the box experiences than not shows
that the company has the right attitude. The fact that some Hohner
harmonicas need major tweaking and offset shows that no one is perfect.

Best to learn these skills as a serious harmonica player and adjust reality,
  if necessary, to suit you.

Is this just a lucky coincidence? Or where they more careful with the setups
back then? Or is there a standard of sorts that have changed?
