          And on the odd occasion where it might be appropriate to raise the level, it really means something. 
          By the way, I find the posts on wearing ear plugs onstage bizarre; like making chili so hot you have to wear a dental dam so you can eat it.

that's the same method my daughter's 2nd grade teacher uses... when she wants the attention of 24 eight year olds, she speaks softer and softer until the kids are almost spilling out of their chairs trying to hear her.  brilliant.
