Re: Subject: [Harp-L] Sad News /Mark Sallings

Elizabeth,

Thanx for the info, I thought I'd heard his name before, I must have been away when Harp-L was discussing Mark's passing back in FEB. I just went to his MYSPACE, I really enjoyed his stuff, I'm sure his music will LIVE ON for a long time....wish I could have met him and heard him play at SPAH...

Best,
Rob Paparozzi

  Hi Rob:

I'm sorry Mark's friend gave you such garbled information. Unfortunately Mark was killed on his way to a gig back on February 25 (nearly 4 months ago). It was mentioned here with quite a few of us remembering Mark's SPAH gig. (Here are a couple of the posts made in early April). Most likely you were away at the time. Am so sorry you found out this way. I remember his son was seriously injured in a car crash just three years ago.

I've just reread Mark's obituary from his myspace page:
and am listening again to his 'Mighty Oaks'....what a great song.... outrageously good. I can't believe it isn't getting anywhere near the same amount of play as the other songs on his site.

Steve Cropper informed me he just played a benefit for Mark Stallings who
died in a car accident 3 weeks ago. Sax and Harmonica player from West
  Plains Missouri.

I was wondered if anyone here has heard of him...

  thanx Rob Paparozzi

Rob, Mark Sallings was a tremendously talented musician, and played great harp. He performed at the SPAH here in Kansas City (2005 or 2006?). He was actually from Arkansas, and played the Tunica casinos quite a bit, as well as other Midwest venues. For about two years he had a regular gig at a casino here in Kansas City, and I was fortunate enough to see him play every 2-3 months. He released four albums, and the best was his last, Temporary Life. I'm only sorry the title referred so unexpectedly to his own life.

You're right...'Mighty Oaks' is a great song. I love that slow Blues too.
This one verse alone...

"now the sun don't shine on Johnny,
and all the Lightning left the sky
the lights went out on Little Walter
Downhome Blues has said goodbye..."

WONDERFUL blues song.

For those who don't yet know, Mark's myspace page has become an 'In
Memoriam' site (April 11 was his birthday), with a mention of SPAH and his band's
appearance there in 2005. I didn't get to enjoy his playing at that SPAH
due to what I thought of as excessive volume (at the time) while having a
very bad headache...but I'm glad I listened to this..it's gorgeous blues.
I've completely revised my opinion of Mark and the band.

I don't usually post links, but I have always been a Mark Sallings fan and
moreso after meeting him in Kansas City at SPAH.
He has a MySpace page with some tunes... I would highly recommend
listening to
Mighty Oaks.. Man, I love this kind of blues.
Steve Webb in Minnesota, where I seldom get to play the blues.
