Re: [Harp-L] RE: Fake books origins

There was a whole series of "underground" books, some pre-dating the "Real Books" back in the 70's.

One was called "Spaces", and consisted of about 5 different books -jazz tunes, transcribed solos, reefer tunes, torch songs, etc - each cost $20 and you had to know the owner of the small music store in order to ask him to go under the counter and bring them out - everyone knew they were illegal.

For whatever reason, I thought they were cool and collected all of them over the years - still have'em and refer to them. There is some duplication of tunes in the Real Book and some have different changes and/or melody lines, indicating that these were transcriptions by jazz musicians/students off of recordings. The differences were the way different musicians heard and interpreted the tunes. Really kind of fascinating to study and a good mini education into jazz theory and chord substitutions.

When I was at Temple University the Real Book was one of our text books.
I heard it came from the Berkley College of Music.
Some guy would show up at the beginning of each semester and sell them.
Eventually there was Vol.2 and the vocal Real Books.

about the story I heard about the original real books. Apparantly, the person
who put it together got prosecuted for copyright violation had the originals
confiscated and then wrote them out again from memory in his prison cell - which
is why there's so many mistakes in them. Does anyone know anymore about this?
