Re: [Harp-L] RE:Butter/ Discography of Grateful Dead and associated groups

Hey,

Someone gave me some bootleg recordings of the Dead with Paul Butterfield
sitting in on about 5 tunes.
Butter, to my ears, actually takes over the band and leads the entire
through all the tunes. I put the recordings in a safe place, and as usual, now
I can seem to find them. Else I would list the tunes. My point is:
Butterfield must have been some kind of band leader.

Best, Chris mastakas

Yes, the notes even on the reissued box set list no harmonica credit.
Either it's John Kahn playing some synthesized keyboard harp or Steve Schuster,
the sax/clarinet/flutes player playing some electronically altered and/or
multi-tracked version of some of those instruments, I would guess. Sure
sounds like harp though.

Recently questions around Will Scarlett's recording activities led me to
this site:

http://www.deaddisc.com

It gives discographical information for the Grateful Dead and several
associated performers and groups.

The
entry for Jerry Garcia's Cats under the Stars does not list a harmonica
player, so whether it's Will Scarlett, Matt Kelly, or some other
instrument sounding like a harmonica, is a mystery.
