Re: [Harp-L] books about jazz chromatic harmonica

Grant -

It's the same Jon Eriksen (the one and only). However, he will be backed by the cream of locally hired musicians and not his regular bandmates.

I should explain that "For Dummies" is a highly successful brand with books on a huge variety of topics. They are always very clearly written so that anyone can understand the subject. Being a "Dummy" is not about being stupid or unworthy of serous consideration. Instead, being a "Dummy" is something everybody goes through when they're new to a subject, don't know the terminology or even what questions they should ask. It's a time of vulnerability, uncertainty, and maybe confusion. The "For Dummies" books treat every reader as an intelligent person who just wants to find their way from knowing nothing to having some understanding.

When the Dummies people approached me to write their harmonica title, I was honored to be entrusted with writing something that they planned to place on store shelves worldwide. Judging by sales and the enthusiastic response, I'd say that I justified their entrusting me with that task.

Harmonica Jazz Chromatic, on the other hand, is a bit too specialized for the Dummies brand, so I decided to produce it myself, at least initially.

Actually, I have Jon Eriksen to thank for prodding me into this. Years ago I published a limited edition of a slim volume on jazz chromatic as I then understood it. Jon always liked that book and asked me to reissue it so that he could mention it during his jazz seminar at SPAH. Dusting it off, I could see that it wan't a bad little volume, but that it could stand some beefing up, especially in light of the things I've learned in the last 20 years . . .

Re:

My new book HARMONICA JAZZ CHROMATIC will be introduced at the SPAH convention in August, where featured jazz soloist Jon Eriksen will also be giving a seminar on jazz chromatic.

Just one more reason to come to SPAH 2009 in Sacramento, california:

I Can't wait to check this out...I really enjoyed Richard Hunter's book...( did this come with some weird plastic record inside, must have been before CD's)
Seems like a long time ago and I am still not so good on the Chromatic.
Not his fault...his breakdown of Stevie Wonder was fantastic...Diatonic 1st position...( Check tone" boogie reggae woman")
changed the way I set lips on 1st position to get more horn like attack on notes.
Thanks Richard

I can't wait to buy Winslow's new book.
Thanks for not using any "dummie" reference...The shoe may fit but I would not buy a book with that title...( of course I will now that I know what is in it " Harmonica for Dummies")

Is this the same Jon Eriksen from the masterful "Stratoloungers",  this guy is very talented on all kinds of instruments and I think also can blow some Diatonic.
Will he have Jeff Buenz on Guitar?

If so, I will be there.

Thanks for the heads up.

Grant
