[Harp-L] Re: Does anyone know what's being done about Marine Bands??? Warning serious harp heresy here.

I'm not being a smart aleck. This is a serious question. There is an
unbelievable amount of talk on this list about Marine Bands deficiencies and
how to cure factory faults with them. And, there seems to be a growing idea
that quality control on MB's is getting worse rather than better and you
really need to buy a "Deluxe" model to get a good harp. Bottom line, why
are people still buying them? History, tradition, nostalgia, availability?

In just the past few days, we've seen several harp players state the quality
of out of the box Suzukis and LO's. I've never heard anybody complain about
out of the box Seydels or even Herrings. But, I've never heard anybody sing
the praises of an out of the box Marine Band, only ways to fix them.

I don't own a standard Marine Band. Never have. I did have a "half set" of
Hohner Blues Harps that I recently gave away. They were pretty but I just
never played them. I prefer my Suzukis and tweaked up S20's. I just can't
see paying thirty bucks for an MB that I apparently need to send to a
customizer or take apart myself and re-do the factory's work. Somebody
explain it to me. I just don't get it.
