'Hack' comes from 'Hackney Cab' ie a vehicle for hire. Keep in mind: just being a great driver doesn't mean you will make money as a cabbie.
I recall reading that the Stones originally hired Bill Wyman because he had a great rig! (Think it was in a 'Guitar Player' article in the early 80s)
