One way to have the best of both worlds at a jam is to BE the vocalist and
the harp player. That way you can't play over the vocalist. Not only that
but you are up there calling the shots instead of being at the mercy of
someone else. Work up 2 or three standards that you can sing. When you write
your name on the sign-up sheet write: "Vocals and Harp". It gets noticed and
it's likely that you'll be called up sooner than if you just write "Harp"
next to your name. Better yet, go with a guitarist buddy that you've worked
on these tunes with so you have a little nucleus up on the stage. Maybe even
dress up a little bit. Now you've got it going on and when you hit the jam
next time you will be remembered.
