Steve's excellent post reminds me of a brief encounter I had with him at SPAH this year which relates directly to the subject of comb material.
 
I sat with Steve at Filisko's teach in one day, excited to show off the cool brass comb that I'd just purchased and fitted onto my Marine Band Deluxe harp in the key of G. Steve cooly examined the heavy harp and I blew on it for him, and told him that I thought it brought a little more volume/brightness to the G harp. He immediately whipped out his own Marine Band Deluxe in G fitted with a stock wooden comb. We compared them, I let him blow on my harp a little. 
 
The brass combed G harp was definately louder/brighter than the stock combed G harp. 
 
Steve's comment was perfect.
"Well, so much for that theory," he said. 
 
I had to agree. 
Thanks again, Steve! I had no idea you'd been looking so deeply into this stubject.
