[Harp-L] Marine Band Deluxe Combs

What people complained about with the initial production run of MB Deluxe combs was not so much the wood swelling up, but the fact that the laquer started peeling off because the combs had first been treated with shellac and then varnished. This led to moisture getting under the laquer, which caused the peeling. Hohner exchanged any combs which exhibited these symptoms. This procedure was dropped right away and since 2005 the pearwood blocks from which the MBDL combs are cut have been varnished with a non-toxic laquer before slicing them into individual combs. However, the varnishing process doesn't seal the cut surfaces, so a small amount of moisture may get under the reed plates if you play very "wet",
