[Harp-L] When 8/9 Draw Reeds won't Sound

Brad:
It could be your attack is too hard. High end draw reeds can freeze or choke if the initial breath pressure is too forceful. A softer attack may help. As someone else suggested, you could be jamming the reeds with saliva if you are a "wet" player, and maybe even if you are not (it happens to all of us at least every now and then). However, if the problem only occurs on your G and D harps, it may be that the reeds are not properly gapped. Re-gapping is fairly easy. Adam Gussow has a step by step how to video on YouTube.
i suspect it's the reed gaps because G and D harps are very different and respond much differently to breath attack/pressure. G is the lowest tuned standard harp and has a long slot comb. D is the lowest of the "high" harps with a short slot comb if it is a Hohner. So... if you are having problems only on these 2 dissimilar keys, it may be the reed gaps of the harps and not you. But try a softer attack first to be sure.
Hope this helps.
