I'm not necessarily a hippie guy, I'm a bluegrass guy, so I'll just comment on the acoustic part of your project and leave the rest for others. 
   
  A bass would be more important than anything. Preferably, you'd have an acoustic bass. When I say bass around here, everyone assumes I'm talking about a bass violin, and I am, but any bass would fill the need. 
  Otherwise have your second guitar (I assume it and the mandolin and banjo are played by the same person) play mandolin 90 percent of the time. He will be your percussion section The mandolin should work just like a snare drum. 
   
   
  Here's an old joke by the way, How many bluegrassers does it take to screw in a light bulb? 
  A: One to screw it in, at least four to stand around it, point and say "get that out of here, it's electric!"
