Re: [Harp-L] any comment on Suzuki ProMaster MR-350 / MR-350V?

I like the tone on the SP 20 a little better but the Promasters are the
workhorse harps I use for gigs. The SPs sound slightly warmer, the
Promasters sound is a little more "cutting". My amp is an SJ410 so I
compensate for the additional top end on the Promasters by kicking up the
bass a little and adjusting my hand cup. One band I play in is loud and
really aggressive. My playing style matches the music style which I can only
describe as the sounfd you might imagine the Stooges would have if Howlin
Wolf was their front man. The Promaster 350s have been more durable in my
opinion and I keep spare reedplates in my gig bag for them as backup.

I've only had one 350V. I didn't like the response on the valves, but that
is probably based on my use which, as I stated, is aggressive.

Onr thing I do like a lot is the weight of the Promasters. The alumin body
gives the harp a heft that I find comfortable. I suppose the aluminm comb
might be the reason for the higher cut of the tone, but I don't know that
for sure.

For Chicago style amplified blues I use the SP20s, for my hard rocking band
I use the Promasters, and for acoustic blues or country I like Marine Bands.

Since it sounds like you are just starting down the road of harp exploration
that so many of us have gone down before, here's a few more notes to take or
leave at your descretion:

I am not "brand loyal". In my gig case I have all kinds of harps. I keep a
Golden Melody in G because it sounds so warm. I have a couple of Delta
Frosts which have a unique sound I can't accurately describe, and I even
have a cheap Huang in E which actually is a warmer sounding E (unusual in my
experience with Huangs). I hate Hohner Bluesharps for no other reason than I
think the reedplate covers look cheap. I can't stand Lee Oskars but I have
to admit they are the most durable harp I've ever played.

To avoid a flame on this list I will state that I am fully aware that this
is all just my opinion. It is absolute fact and truth to nobody on this
planet except me.
