When you minimize the force used to create the maximum result in sound on a  
harmonica, as well as learning to control the bends so that you don't slam the 
 note created through bending technique down to what I call the "floor" 
(which is  actually almost 1/4 tone flat of the true pitch), the reeds will last a 
very  long time with minimal need for tuning or replacing.
 
The trick is to understand and absorb the above mentioned factors into your  
playing - not letting yourself go emotionally into overdrive and trying to  
compete volume wise by using force.
