[Harp-L] Re: Steel Reeds

It'd be really cool if Seydel sold spare reeds. Yeah, I agree it's great customer service to allow people to send back the harp and repair it for free, but I'm a bit of a lazy ass, and having to pack the harp, go to the post office, then wait for the harp to be repaired and finally go to the post office again to pick up the parcel because I was at work when the postman dropped by is a pain in the butt for me.

The two 1847s I bought to try them out lasted no more than 6 months. I repaired one with a Hohner brass reed, and after extreme embossing (Seydel reeds are way wider) it kind of works decently. I have the other one still waiting in the line. I asked Seydel if they sold spare reeds or offered them free for repair as a warranty policy (I could prove I broke the reed because I literally broke it without previous detuning warning -almost swallowed it, actually- so I could take a picture of the reedplate). They said they were thinking about it, but weren't doing it yet. It'd actually save them a lot of work to offer to send the reed instead of repairing the harp themselves. I'd gladly buy the reed(s) otherwise. It'd probably be cheaper than the whole harp postage anyway! I've seen on their website that they sell brass reed sets. Could use a brass reed, but I don't need a whole set...Harponline does a great job selling spare Hohner reeds (also usable in Herings, which is a great thing), you order reeds on a key/hole/draw-blow basis. I just wish Seydel would do the same.

So, that's what I think. Terrific harps, terrific service, nothing to complain, but please allow us to help ourselves. Please start selling spare reeds...

Greetings,

David

I had a similar experience with an 1847, sent it back, and it was repaired.
