I think you're spot on here, Jon. Gaps too tight; reeds choke, especially on
hard playing. I'd add that the symptom of the reeds quitting after being
played a little while and then working again when they are played for the
next gig also fits the tight gap diagnosis. My theory there is that the
reeds/reedplates pick up condensation or saliva which have just enough
surface tension to effectively tighten the gaps even more than when they're
dry. Then after the affected harp dries off, the problematic reeds work
until they get wet again. Lie I said, a theory.

Widen those gaps up a tad, Tom, and all will be well. I jist betchya.
