Anti theft devices from stores. Snip off one end with shears or razor knife. There will be a couple thin stainless strips inside. They are usually curved, but some are flat. They are 3/16" (4.5mm) wide and 3/4" (19mm) long. Regardless as to whether they are flat or curved, they WILL fit alongside the reeds in that space and narrow enough to fit without cutting further.

Also, a 1/4" ball is a little too small for embossing. You don't want to make a 'furrow'. You want to push metal into the slot gradually. 7-8x the width of the slot is about right. A nickel would be about right. And the smooth edge is hard enough. I used a 3/4" ball on a shaft.
