I once saw an interview with Dizzy Gillespie on TV, during which he said (paraphrasing here, but the essence is correct;)

"All musicians start out by learning physical technique. Then they steal from (and emulate) the musicians who influenced them. After awhile you find yourself utilizing your technique to play what you stole in a different manner, if only to avoid boring yourself.

"Eventually you reach the limits of your own technique, and also reach the limits of your ability to steal. At that point, some know-it-all critic will say that you have your own style."
