Subject: Re: [Harp-L] Jason Ricci superharp?

See...the great thing about a harmonica forum like harp-l; any on-line forum
in fact.. is that one can choose which posts to read, and which not to,
based upon the subject.

Since you don't think Jason "is the greatest thing since sliced bread" and
have also specifically commented negatively on his voice (comparing him to
John Lee Hooker of all people, for some reason that seems to defy logic) - you
can easily skip over, delete or otherwise ignore any "Jason Ricci" posts.

Why is it a problem if other people here on harp-l who have known him for
years, and which forum he happens to belong to (the only one besides Michael
Peloquin who does, as far as I know)...of the current crop of relatively famous
name players...are happy and excited because finally, after years of paying
his dues, it looks as though good things might finally be happening for his
band?

You don't have to click on the links provided (I certainly don't have the
time to look at every link other folks provide)...you don't have to attend any
of his shows....in fact, you can live your entire life pretending he doesn't
exist and go on supporting your own harmonica heroes, whoever they may be.
No one will fault you for doing so, least of all Jason.

Is the support (it's not 'hype') he receives here by harp-l members whose
lives he's touched (those of us who've met him at the many different Buckeye
and SPAH conventions and his 300 gigs a year across the country)(including the
charitable ones), and people he's taught to play harp, or play harp better,
somehow affecting your enjoyment of life or hurting you? I can't imagine how
that would be possible.

Something doesn't compute. As far as I see it, he's one of harp-l's own
making good, which makes this particular time (his first major studio CD release
tour) reason for celebration....and clearly a harp-related issue.

So why the negativity and silly comparisons? Someone explain this to me
logically, please?

Elizabeth

P.S. Dan: Just what does constitute "an awful lot" in your book? Seems to
me lately that any mention at all of Jason - (a few weeks' ago post of mine
that stood alone, for instance) brings out comments by those who seem not to
want to see any favourable comment about him whatsoever. So if it's a case
of 'damned if we do, damned if we don't', we might as well be damned by doing.

But maybe there is an awful lot of promotion and
hype for Jason here on harp-l , and
maybe he isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread!

"- to me his vocals are weak and overdone- granted
this may be s from the poor quality of the sound, but having
seen John Lee Hooker sing this stuff by himself and his
guitar, by comparison Jason sounds like a boy
singing a man's song!
