Re: [Harp-L] Leaky Super 64X

Are you quite sure that the covers are where the leakage is coming
from?

Does it play any differently with the covers off, for instance?

One thing you can do to seal around the front edge of the covers is to
roll some beeswax (providing you are not allergic to it) into a thin
'string" and press it into the interstice between the front edge of the
cover and the back edge of the mouthpiece.

However, the covers are at best a minor source of air leakage. The more
likely sources for air leaks:

1) The reedplates. Remove the covers and loosen all the reedplate
screws. Make sure that the reedplates are seated flat on the comb AND
that the entire front edge of each reedplate along its entire length is
flush and tight against the plastic ridge along the front of the comb.
Then tighten all the screws finger-tight (i.e., the shaft of the
screwdriver resists pressure from the fingertips), starting with the
crews in the middle of the reedplate and moving outward toward the
edges.

2) The Mouthpiece assembly. Examine the left (non-button) end of the
mouthpiece to ensure that the mouthpiece is properly seated:

- the edge of the mouthpiece is flat against the slider and

- the slider is flat against the backplate and

- the backplate is flat against the comb).

Then check the tightness of the screws holding down the mouthpiece.
Tighten each screw until the slide will not move, then back off until
it moves with sufficient freedom.

Another possibility is missing valves. Ever reed except the smallest
four to six reeds on each reedplate should have valves. Looking at one
side of the plate it should alternate reed, valve, reed, valve, etc.
most of the way along the reedplate. This especially important for the
valves on the inside of the reedplate.
