[Harp-L] Another GREAT video

It's called Gunsmoke Blues, so named because it was shot by the camera crew that filmed "Gunsmoke" in the late 60's/early 70's. Apparently they were all blues fans on production hiatus who hauled all their gear to a 1971 performance by Big Mama Thronton, Big Joe Turner, George "Harmonica" Smith and Muddy Waters and band in Oregon.

What I like about it is that it is a pro filming with many close ups and great audio. The show appears to be one of those tours where, aside from Muddy Waters, the back up band may be the local musicians. It is great fun, including awkward moments and missed cues by the band, eliciting quite a stoney stare from Big Mama Thornton. This is what really happens at shows like this - different than the produced concert videos nowadays where every mistake can either be edited out or corrected.

Big Mama plays a mean harmonica. George Smith tears it up - his body english is something to behold.

There are also cool interviews in the limo with the above mentioned performers.

It is available from Top Cat Records, a division of UMG Recordins, Inc. It was a loaner from one of my students, so I don't really know how to order it.

I did find the DVD "The American Folk Blues Festival
1962 - 1966 Volume 1", which looks like a great DVD...
