I love the way that Miles Davis would change a note or two of a melody and somehow make it sound as if this is the way it should/could sound. Since MD is my inspiration, I've started playing around with altering a melodic line slightly and musically to make it easier to play on a diatonic without a need to place an OB in a position of prominence. Even w/out OB's, this technique works to smooth out problems inherent in harmonicas  - check out Jerry Portnoy's take on "Misty", in which part of the chorus is played up an octave.
