[Harp-L] LW in Europe

Nate wrote about LW:

He was told to leave his amp at home in the US because of
the
differences in voltage in Europe. This meant he had to play
acoustically
into a vocal mic that was fed thru the PA. He was also stunned when it
was
suggested to him that he shouldn't even cup his hands around the mic.

I guess you also have to factor in here that the still predominant idea of the ideal blues setting in Europe at that time was pretty much the acoustic troubadour, or the similar duo (Sonny & Terry perfect case in point). Remember the reactions to early Muddy concerts in the UK: critics leaving the concert hall with hands over their ears, shaking their heads in disbelief over this assault to their sensibilities.
I have friends who were around at that time who were -- still are -- dead set against blues being played "with electricity", a horrible sign of decadence. Also recall a prominent blues author (was it Paul Oliver?) who called Muddy a "rock ´n´roll artist".
Probably LW was staged according to this ideal, and so to speak "purified" of his electronic excesses, regardless of his being a sort of champion of the amplified harp. He had seen better days at that time but still, this short LW clip was a tremendous disappointment.
  Cheers Martin
