They're a BIG help when you're starting out. For instance, I'm playing a song from sheet and I need to hit the A, and I happen to know it's on #6. I'm not sure I'm getting/hitting it. Cover up all the other holes to check it out-- yup, there it is!

I don't know how ANYBODY could read music for diatonics, but certainly for chromatics it'd be just like any other instrument.

Trombone has GOT to be the hardest instrument:
no keys, frets, or open strings for reference;
continuously sliding tone;

How they hell does ANYONE play that thing?
