Re: [Harp-L] dressing as a musician

how bout this?

LEARN HOW TO PLAY

...nothing's worse than some clown that looks like a 1950's pimp in a time warp
who get's on stage with some mediocre chops.

the playin makes the clothes.. not the otherway around.
the playin puts asses in seats,, and promoters give gigs quicker for that
than wingtips.
i personally love it when a charles bukowski look-alike gets up there and shreds.

bottom line is dress like yourself, practice, and it's amazing how what
you wear becomes your "style".

this thread has been entirely too long.

Good points, all -

In the end it is about respect, though others might call it customer service. Your strategy (or lack thereof) may dictate who your customers are. That is why one must stand back on occaision and look at oneself.

Sometimes dressing down sells, sometimes formalities sell. Inasmuch as music is a business, one must stand ready to anticipate the customer and package the goods accordingly. That's what leads to return customers.

Excellent comments.

I feel that 'respect' is one of the most important aspects; getting it from others and showing that you have it for yourself.

Personally, I'm turned off by the 'egocentricattitude' of those musicians that are excellent players and choose to dress down or dress sloppily, in a sense (IMO) trying to -prove- that they are soo cool and talented that they can dress just how they please, no matter how shoddy or tattered.

I much prefer the 'classyattitude' of someone like a Tony Bennet, who is actually a very nice and humble gentleman with TREMENDOUS talent that, because of his vibes, is a RespectMagnet from all who experience him.

ah well, to each his own.

I know that when I started making an effort to dress "up" for gigs, I > started getting more respect from fans, club owners, journalists, DJs and, > yes , musicians too.
